Did you know there are ways to save the environment all around you? With just a small effort you can help save the environment every work day. There are many easy things you can do either according to Caleb Laieski as part of a company-wide effort or just as an individual.
Does your work have a ‘Green Team?’ You can join it or start one yourself. A Green Team encourages management to implement policies which help the environment. Your team could audit the company’s energy and waste. This is easy and ‘how-to’ guides are online. Introduce as many of the suggested improvements as possible. Your team can plan activities to honor ‘Earth Day’ like educational seminars or ‘green’ contests. Remember ‘Spirit Week’ at school? Wasn’t it fun? Your team could sponsor a Green Week with ‘help the environment’ games and contests. You’ll be amazed at how fast adults jump at a chance to be silly in the name of a good cause. These are fun ways to save the environment.
Conserving energy in the workplace can be accomplished with three easy changes which can lower the electric bill, too. First, get rid of screen savers. Yes, they’re fun, but programming the monitors to ‘sleep’ instead saves a lot of energy and money. Computers should also ‘sleep’ after 20 minutes of idleness. Second, check if your other office electronics have sleep modes and program them to ‘sleep’ often, too. Otherwise instruct employees to turn them off after each use. Third, eliminate individual fans and heaters. Judicious use of mini-blinds can do a lot to regulate the temperature of an office. These energy solutions are key ways to save the environment.
Did you know you can recycle a lot more than just paper? Place several different recycling bins around the office for paper, plastic, glass and aluminum cans. Cell phones, rechargeable batteries, printer cartridges and alkaline batteries can also be recycled. Encourage your boss to donate old computers and electronics. These donations are tax deductible. Many ways to save the environment also save a lot of green. Whenever possible, go paperless. Store files digitally instead of on paper. Email, memos and other correspondences. Eliminate the fax cover sheet. You know you are faxing it. Do you need a piece of paper to tell you so?
There are even ways to save the environment while you eat. Your office lunch room is also a hotbed of squandered energy and excess waste. Find out if your vending machines are ‘green’. Those monsters are huge energy suckers. Is there a sink or dishwasher to clean, reusable dishes and utensils? Encourage your boss to make the lunch room ‘green friendly.’
Even if your company won’t adopt ways to save the environment, you can act greener. All of the above suggestions can be implemented individually. Never print when you can email. Always use both sides of the paper. Get rid of the heater under your desk. Wear a sweater and extra socks instead. Form a carpool. Stop buying brown bags, buggies and bottled water. Instead, get a lunch box, plastic food containers and a reusable water bottle.
There are lots of ways to save the environment. By finding small, but significant ways to go green in your work day, you can all help the world be a better and more beautiful place.
